Never travel the week before Christmas.

My flight was scheduled to leave Kansas City, MO at 11:47am central standard time on Friday, December 19th via US Airways so I made sure to get up early so that Lauren (my brother’s girlfriend) and I could make the 45 minute drive to the airport. Upon arrival with my itinerary in hand, I was directed to the United Airlines check in counter and checked in for my flight – apparently, I wasn’t flying US Airways after all. Lauren left me to proceed through the security check point, neither of us knowing the problems I was about to be faced with. My flight didn’t leave for another 30 minutes or so when I realized I didn’t have a seat assignment on my ticket; I went over to the United counter in front of the gate my flight was suppose to leave from and was rudely told that I had to wait for my name to be called…I didn’t think anything of it at that point.

30 minutes pass and people start to board the aircraft while I’m patiently waiting wondering when I was going to get to board. Boarding was complete about 15 minutes later and I still hadn’t boarded the flight and was rudely informed that the flight had been overbooked and that I was on stand by and no seats were available. I immediately felt my face get hot and tears well up in my eyes – I was stuck once again in the airport on the same damn airline that got me stranded in Dulles last year OVER NIGHT! I called my mom and my grand mother to explain to them what was going on, both of them livid…the lady at the counter overheard me and prompted me to go to the other counter so that I could rebook my flight and that she would meet me over there when she was done.

The lady proceeded to check flight after flight to no available. Everything was booked. No seats were available on any flights to Charleston, SC. I was suppose to fly from Kansas City, to Washington Dulles have a 2 hour layover, fly into Charlotte, NC layover for 40 minutes and fly into Charleston…NOTHING was available. All I wanted was to go home for Christmas, all I wanted was to be with my family. I called my grandmother and asked her how far Atlanta, Savannah and Myrtle Beach were from Charleston thinking that if I could at least fly into somewhere close someone could drive and pick me up. After searching for a bit the lady found a flight that would take me to Chicago and then into Savannah – she booked me and I had confirmed seats. She also informed me that there was a flight leaving from Chicago going to Charleston and that if I wanted to get put on standby when I arrived there, I could and hopefully get a seat on that flight. I did just that while waiting 3-4 hours in the airport.

When the time came, I didn’t get a seat on the Charleston flight but I had a confirmed seat on the Savannah flight so no worries. But when it came time to board for Savannah, we ended up waiting another hour because the aircraft hadn’t shown up and they had three different flights leaving out of one gate…in the end, I made it on the flight and safely to Savannah, GA at 12am in the morning. My grandmother, grandfather and cousin picked me up and we made it back home at 3am in Charleston. I had a good week at my families for Christmas despite the drama that always seems to linger in the air but by the time the 29th came, I was ready to go home – not only did I miss my stuff and my own space, I was looking forward to picking up Alan. I arrived home at 12:30pm on the 29th and picked him up at 10:30pm that night, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Moral of the story: if you want to make it to your destination on time, don’t fly the week before Christmas in the dead of winter when everything is snowed in…and never, ever ever ever, fly United Airlines.

Traveling.

If you’re a frequent traveler whether it be by air or auto or other means you might want to consider getting travel insurance. After the ordeal Alan had with his flight to Charleston last week, it seems that such insurance could come in handy luckily, however, neither of us travel very often so there is no need for either of us to get it. And while, he’s been here for the past week it still irritates the crap out of me that he got here at 6pm the NEXT day compared to the 11:32pm arrival on a direct flight leaving Detroit at 9:18pm the day before. At least his luggage had already arrived and we didn’t have to deal with it being lost like we thought it was going to be. Whether he was a day late or not…I’m glad that he’s been here, spending time with me, and meeting my family for the past week – I don’t want him to leave :(

I’m Back!

If you haven’t noticed, I’m back from Michigan and the most amazing weekend I’ve ever had with the most amazing man in the world! :) Obviously, you can tell just from that that I had a great time – which I did and I wouldn’t change any of it for the world…except for the trip to have been longer. My flight from Charleston to Detroit went smoothly and I actually arrived ahead of schedule, was about 2:15ish rather than 2:30. I arrived at the hotel at exactly 3pm and was able to relax a little before I changed my clothes and got ready for Alan to come to the hotel. He had to work that Friday so he wasn’t able to pick me up at the airport but that’s okay…he got to the hotel around 5:30pm because he was silly and went to the wrong hotel, haha! The initial moments were us being nervous and not really knowing what to say since we were both taken aback by the fact that both of us were finally together but it soon passed and things went smoothly the rest of the weekend.

He surprised me with a box of Godiva Milk Chocolates and a card for Sweetest Day. We went out to eat the first night at Champps which has delicious food. Saturday, we went over to the mall and checked out a few stores – I got to go into an Apple store :P  We also got 2 chocolate covered Strawberries at Godiva and he wouldn’t let me look at the jewelry because he knew I’d go straight for the wedding bands- there was a sign at one of the stores and I started to smile, he’s like what are you smiling at and I turned him around and he saw what it was…he was like “don’t even, missy” :P That night he treated me to an amazing dinner at Bennihanna’s Japanese Steak house, where he had lobster and fillet mignon and I had steak and shrimp along with fried rice and soup – we both dressed in purple, it was cute :D After dinner, we went to a late movie and watched We Own the Night and headed back to the hotel for lovely us time  On Sunday, we met his mom at a local cafe that Alan always goes too for breakfast – his mom is so cute and such a trip…she talks a mile a minute though, haha. We ended up going back to the hotel after that and slept most of the afternoon since we had been out until 2 or so the night before but when we got up we just drove around town and went to a few stores.

The town he lives in (Plymouth, MI) is the cutest little town with the cute little houses. In my opinion, it’s just a great all-American type town; it’s not really uppity or rich looking but it’s not all old and run down either, it has it’s own unique flare to it and it looks like the city takes good care of it’s property and parks. The trees were absolutely gorgeous with leaves that were yellow, red and brown and the weather…perfect! I can definitely see myself living there and raising a family which is very important to me and to him, so that’s a good thing :)

He had to work yesterday so after I dropped him off at work, I went back to the hotel and slept until 10am; I woke up and finished packing and checked out around 11:30am. I drove downtown and ate lunch at Panera Bread and just sat around until 4 for Alan to meet me. It was a nice day but one of those days were I had to fight back tears every minute because I knew I would be leaving that night. We ate dinner at Applebee’s and headed to the airport around 6:30pm…we sat in the airport for about an hour and a half before I went through the security checkpoint at which point he could no longer be with me as they only allow people with boarding passes past those points these days. It was the hardest thing I had to do; he cried, I cried…we cried together. I didn’t want to leave and he didn’t want me to go. For the first time, I have someone in my life that loves me for the person I am and expects me to be nobody different. I was scared when I went to Michigan only because I didn’t know what would happen – I didn’t know if things would change when I got back to Charleston or if he’d like the person he had gotten to know the last 3 months and to be able to say that nothing has changed between us is amazing…the only thing that has changed is that we are closer than before and we’re stronger as a couple. He means the world to me, the absolute world to me and I would do anything for him. He is such an amazing person with a great personality, not to mention he looks hot in his purple dress shirt  He’s coming down here in December and even though that is 2 months away we’ll make it and we’ll be okay. I know now where I am suppose to be and who I want to be with and the answer is in Plymouth with Alan.

Alan & I

The only picture I have from this weekend aside from a few I took of me at the hotel prior to him meeting me there. The weekend was filled with amazing memories and good times that will not be forgotten – I was too busy spending time with the person I love to worry about the camera

Michigan Here I Come!

Yesterday was SUCH a long day…I didn’t fall asleep until 4am or so and had to get up for a class that started at 11:30am. I got home around 1pm or so and crashed for a few hours until the lawn mower people started mowing away outside the damn apartment – that woke me up :(   Then Alan called around 3:30-4pm like he always does when he gets off work; he’s way to cute, acting all giddy and stuff because he’s excited :D Anyways…it wasn’t until later in the evening that I was able to get all my clothes washed and dried and folded and put away in the suitcase – I still have to put some stuff in but I’ll do that in the morning. I’m getting up around 9-9:30am so I can take a shower and make sure I have everything I need, my flight leaves at 12:15pm but boarding starts at 11:50am and you know they always tell you to be there an hour or two early. I’ll be in Michigan until Monday night which I arrive home at 11:35pm…so until then!

Trip Booked!

I did it, I finally did it…I booked my flight and hotel to Michigan, I leave October 19th at 12:15pm and arrive in Detroit at 2:30pm (non-stop flight) and will come home on October 22nd at 9:32pm and arrive in Charleston at 11:35pm (non-stop flight). I am very excited and feel so much better now that I finally booked everything; I was stressing out because of the money issue (it ended up costing $433 for the flight & hotel combined) even though we are splitting everything down the middle (each paying $216), but Alan reassured me he was okay on his end and that everything would be fine. I’m not really a freak when it comes to money, it’s just that over the years I have grown to not ask for anything or to do anything involving money unless it’s something I absolutely needed.

My parents never had extra money lying around to just go out and do things and I always felt bad if I asked for something because I’d get told that we didn’t have the money or just feel bad in general and so I learned to just stop asking. I don’t spend a lot of money, I pay the bills that I have which is just the cable bill and help my mom when I can so when it comes down to actually spending money and large amounts of it; I don’t like it. Of course, the money spent on this trip will be beyond well worth it, that’s just how I am when it comes to money and believe me, I searched and searched for the best deal possible but after noticing it had jumped from $408 to $433 in the span of a few hours I had to get it booked so that it didn’t sky rocket in price. :) I can’t wait!!

Travel Time!

After much discussion and a few tears of frustration, Alan and I finalized our plans for next month; I’ll be flying out to Michigan on Friday October 19th and coming home on Monday October 22nd, all I have to do now is buy the tickets and reserve the hotel which I’ll be doing through Cheaptickets as they offered a good package at $408 which we’re splitting down the middle so it’ll end up being $201 a person which isn’t half bad. I’m so glad that we figured out our plans though, I was really worried that I wouldn’t be able to see him after getting my hopes up the entire month that I’d be flying out there. If his work schedule didn’t conflict with timing and plane tickets weren’t so expensive flying out of Detroit to Charleston, then he would be coming here but I’m very excited about going to Michigan, and finally spending time with him!

Speaking of travel, it isn’t very often that I get to go on ‘vacation’ and I’ve never really actually been on a family vacation (ie: to Disney World or a place like that) so it’s very nice when I actually get a chance to get out of Charleston, everyone needs time away sometimes. Over the past year, I’ve been to Florida three times (to Fort Myers) and I’ve always wanted to take an Orlando vacations and go to Disney World. I’ve heard different things about Disney, some say it’s overrated others say it’s a good time…it would just be nice to actually be able to go and vacation at a place like such with my mom and brother, something that we’ve never really done before: a family vacation. Perhaps, I’ll mention it to my mom and maybe we can save and plan something for next summer, it would be good for all three of us! Either way, I am off to bed now so goodnight :)
