Turning into a home maker? Not quite.

Since moving into my apartment – my first ever – and living on my own which means depending on me for everything, I have come to realize that it takes more time and effort to “run” a household than I thought. I, honestly, feel bad about all the times I didn’t help my mom around the house even if it was with simple chores like vacuuming or doing the dishes. I make sure the dishes are done every day and have made a habit of putting them into the dishwasher right away, I also make sure to unload it promptly and not just open it up to get a clean dish out.

I’ve also noticed that I can’t stand for things to be messy…when I lived at home, my space was my bedroom and I was in control of how I kept it; yes, I’m not the most organized or clean person but when I do get to cleaning I make sure everything is put away and nicely organized, now I do that on a regular basis – I seriously don’t know how many times I’ve cleaned the kitchen counters and stove top or how many times I’ve straightened up the living room since I moved in even though the messes are not really big at all.

One of the bigger changes for me, however, is cooking. I never cooked before because I absolutely hated it, it was a chore that I didn’t want to take part in – the preparing, the cooking, the cleaning up afterwards. Ugh. But since moving into my apartment, I actually enjoy cooking a lot more than I thought I would. I’m still trying to figure things out and looking up different recipes to try out (I’ll definitely have to check out some easy green bean recipes), but in general I enjoy cooking for myself. It’s also something that I have more control over now since I do live on my own and I’m solely responsible for the foods I buy and put into my body; I mean, I had control over that before because my mom couldn’t force me to eat something I didn’t want too but if someone else is buying the groceries and they refuse to buy more healthy foods what are you going to do? I try my best to buy healthy foods and I can only see it get better from here on out. I’m really excited with how things are going in this area of my life. :)

My apartment.

I never really got around to posting much about the apartment I moved into last month when I arrived in Kansas; in fact, I had a whole post thought out in my head about show casing the items that my grand parents have bought me and how I’ve got everything set up. I still plan on doing this and I’d really like to have some pictures to show you since visuals make it easier than trying to explain how everything is set up in an apartment you aren’t familiar with except I don’t have a camera. I’m going to see if I can borrow my dad’s or brother’s when I go to their house next, I also have to compile a list of the items that were bought for me; many of them are really neat and I think a lot of you would like them.

In general though, I have everything set up and the way I want it – at least for now. The living room and bathroom are taken care of as is the kitchen. I do need to get some new, brighter light bulbs for the bathroom since the current bathroom lighting is not that great and I still need to get some kind of kitchen rack to put next to the stove so I have more room to store pots, pans and foods – I don’t have much kitchen space at all. I also am trying to keep an eye out for a cheap (either new or used) coffee table since the one that came from my dad’s has a loose leg and there is NO way to fix it, so it leans and looks silly.

I’ve tried my best to make it my ‘home’ and make it warm and inviting but I’m not quite there yet, hopefully it will be soon.

My fish has a new home!

One of the things that my grandmother had bought me for my apartment was this really cute, fish bowl that sits inside a larger fish statue type thing and while it was really cute and decorative it was absolutely too small for the Betta fish that I got to go in it. At first, I didn’t think too much of it since the pet stores keep them in the small containers and the majority of “Betta fish bowls” are small containers as well. But after a week or so of having him, I noticed that the water was quick to go bad and he didn’t have enough room to swim around in and often would just hid under the little plant I put in there.

So after class, I went to Wal-Mart with a friend and picked up a boring 1 gallong goldfish bowl that came with gravel, water conditioner, some food and a net; it actually turned out nice than I thought it would. I just finished transfering him over to his new home and he seems to like it much better – hasn’t stopped swimming around. I’m glad that all I have to worry about is getting fish supplies and not horse supplies or some crazy thing like that, I wanted to get a dog when I originally moved in but with them having put new carpet in I’m not allowed – I guess it’s some what a good thing because it saves me from having to buy dog supplies which can get fairly expensive and I’m a broke college student, so I can’t really afford to buy things that a dog might need; at least, I have my fish and he’s simple to take care of :)  Here are pictures of what I did have him in and what he is in now (sorry they are kind of bad, they were taken with my phone:

Allgeries!

Is it possible to be allergic to dust? I’m sure it is…I think I am or at least have a really horrible allergy to it. I remember when I first moved to South Carolina from Kansas six years ago and would get sinus infections monthly – it was horrible and I hated it. I cleaned my room a few weeks ago and I got sick from it because of the dust, I ended up with a stuffy nose, a headache that wouldn’t go away, I just felt horrible. I didn’t realize at the time that I had actually gotten sick from cleaning my room until I cleaned out my computer case the other day trying to fix my cd-rom. It was then that I realized I had gotten sick from all the dust; when I cleaned my room I thoroughly went through EVERYTHING, dusted, moved stuff around, threw stuff away and while my room isn’t dirty or overly dusty, it was time to dust and it was just enough to get to me. I realized after cleaning my computer case out which was full of dust that it was the dust that was causing me to become congested because it happened again the other day – luckily though it didnt’ say with me long. After this, I’ve seriously been thinking about getting one of those air purifiers to put in the bedroom and/or house when I move into an apartment with Alan or something…it would help a lot with keeping the air clean along with getting rid of nasty allergens that may make me sick even though I haven’t had a sinus infection in a very long time, it still hurst me bad when spring comes around because of all the pollen and stuff outside. Heck, I even make sure that there is a hepa filter on the vacuum cleaner now so that it catches those nasty allergens!

A Natural Home is a Healthy Home.

In the recent months, I’ve been turned onto products that are non-toxic, free of harsh chemicals and contain naturally derived ingredients like the home cleaning products made by Method Home…why? Because not only are they safe for the home but they are safe for humans and have a lesser chance to cause irritations and are not harmful! However, I never Organic Beddingjumped on the whole ‘organic’ bandwagon and never really knew there was such a wide variety of products that were organic outside of food until the other day. I was browsing around the store with my mom and I walked pass a set of bath towels, however, these weren’t ordinary bath towels they were ORGANIC towels made of 100% natural cotton and contained no harsh chemicals. Not only do stores sell organic bath towels, but they also carry organic bedding which includes sheets, pillowcases and comforters and even items for baby - all made of 100% natural cotton, free of harsh chemicals like formaldehyde and vinyl chloride. Having items as such around the house makes for a very non-toxic environment which is not only good for the environment itself but the people that live in the house. I’ll definitely have to search around for more products like these because it never hurts to be safe and healthy at the same time.

Yummy for my tummy!

I’ve wanted to cook/bake all day and originally was going to do so when I came home from class this afternoon, but never got around to it and opted to just throw something into the microwave. I’m not a cook and by no means am I one of those females who loves to spend time in the kitchen baking and cooking up delicious meals…but every now and then I’ll get on a kick where I’ll want to bake and usually it’s sweet stuff. After seeing a picture of a cupcake that Ana’s husband brought her today, I decided I would bake cupcakes and I have done just that, they are actually finishing up in the oven right now :yummy:

I had to run over to good ol’ Walmart to pick up needed ingredients along with a new muffin pan since my mom has thrownSilicon Muffin Pan out every pan we have due to it being old and rusting. She wanted me to look for one of those silicon rubber ones (like in the picture!), you know where you can just put in your batter, cook it in the oven and when it comes out, pop out the muffins or whatever it is that you have in the pan without having to worry about liners or nonstick cooking spray; the damn thing was $10! So I opted for a regular ol’ metal muffin pan for $4. I never really paid attention to the cost of a cookware set, flatware set or baking items because I have had no need too, but after looking around for the silicon muffin thing my mom was talking about I realize how expensive even THOSE items are. I guess I should start paying more attention, after all come the end of this semester which is in December I’ll be off on my own at a different school and some time after that, living with the boyfriend…we’ll need items like that in our kitchen :P

Decorating More Adult-Like.

When my mom and I moved into our townhouse at the of January this year, I had trouble trying to figure out how I wanted to decorate my room. I wanted something different, something that was more “adult like” I guess you could say, which meant no more stuffed animals hanging from nets attached to the walls/ceiling! Not only did that include searching for new bed sheets and the like because I had gotten a brand new bed which was a queen and not a full, I also had to search for some kind of blinds or curtains to keep the dang street light from shining it at night.

I can’t tell you how long and how hard I looked for something I liked…I just couldn’t find anything. I originally was going to get roman shades to cover my windows because I figured that would be enough to keep the light out, but everything I found in the stores was made out of fabric that wasn’t heavy enough. Finally though, after much search I found and settled on some nice teal curtains from JcPenny’s and they work perfectly; not to mention, they match a set of bed sheets I have. I have since then tried to coordinate all of my colors in my room around the teal, even my bathroom has teal in it which in my opinion is definitely ‘adult-like’ as opposed to how my room was previously :)
