A few years ago, I got my second cartilage piercing in my right ear – my first one was in my left ear but I ended up taking it out because it went in crooked and never healed correctly. I don’t recall if I took out the piercing out or if it closed up a little after I got it because of having to take it out when I spent time in the hospital but either way, it was taken out. Ever since then, it’s never fully closed back up and you can tell where the piercing was because the hole is visible on the front of my ear.
A small bump remains on the back of my ear and tends to occasionally get filled up with junk, so me being the smart person I am (sarcasm!) decided to poke my ear ring through it last night because I needed to get the junk out of it! I ended up poking the ear ring all the way through and ended up forcing it more than I should have and now my ear is sore as hell. Obviously, that wasn’t a smart thing to do! It clearly has closed up in the middle of the piercing but not on the outsides where the holes actually are. Either way, I’ve been cleaning it since last night and trying not to mess with it but it’s really sore…I shouldn’t have done that but I was able to get whatever was inside the hole out.
The hole doesn’t bother me, EVER unless it gets stuff inside it but I just squeeze it out when that happens – I can’t believe it’s been so many years and the hole is still there. I want to get it pierced again and if I do I’ll definitely go to a piercing shop and not some piercing stand where they do it with a gun…that’s why both of those piercings turned out the way they did.

Ouch! I have one piercing I almost never used and it still hasn’t closed up. I tried sticking an earring through it the other day and I didn’t even have to break any skin. I guess I got them pierced well. My mother made me do it at the doctor’s office so I didn’t get an infection. I hope your ear feels better.

Intriguing.
Once upon a time I had my nose pierced. That only lasted a few weeks… turned out I guess I was playing with the piercing in my sleep, and one morning I woke up with a nose ring beside me in bed, and the hold closed up in my nose.
I got my ears pierced when I lived in Africa. Since it was Africa, after all, I went the safe route and sterilized a needle with a flame. Then I had my roommate stick the needle in my ears.
I’ve thought about getting a cartilage piercing for a long time, but problems like what you describe are the exact reason I haven’t!
