Poor Mom.
My mom is having such a hard time with her feet and as been for quite some time now. A few months back, she went to the doctor and they did xrays on her feet and found out that she had heel spurs. While heel spurs may not always cause pain in people that have them - it’s possible to have heel spurs without any associated pain - it is believed, I think, that her pain is being caused by inflammation in her feet and how exactly they got that way is beyond me. I feel really bad for her but I don’t know what to do to help or even make her feel better. When she gets up out of a chair or the couch, she has to get up really slowly and when she walks she shuffles somewhat rather than actually walking - she has kind of a limp because of the pain. The first doctor visit they gave her cortisone shots in both feet to help with the pain, which seemed to help but it only last 6 months or so - she recently went back because the pain had gotten worse, was given a night splint to wear on the foot/leg that is the worse and given more shots except this time the shots haven’t helped at all.
Not only has she found out in past months that she has heel spurs and inflammation in her feet that she can’t seem to get rid of, she also found out that she has Keratoconus (I think that’s what it is) which means that over time her cornea (in the eye) has thinned out and started to change shape which causes distortion in vision and makes it hard to see. She went to the eye doctor a few months ago because it seemed to have gotten worse which is when she found this out - they gave her a contact to wear in the eye to help with it, but she’s stubborn and never wears it. It makes me sad even though I rarely think about it that my mom seems to be ‘falling apart.’ It also scares me because it’s possible that my brother or me could end up with things like this as we get older due to genetics etc. I don’t want to have to start filling my house with medical supplies any time soon to take care of my mom and I hope that in due time she’ll start to feel better. Makes me sad to see her in so much pain even though I don’t let it show.

Ask your mom to join up at http://www.kcglobal.org on the forum, she will get good support there.

I second what Rick said–KC can be treated and if you go to kcglobal.org, you will find out about the new treatments that help stop the progression of the disease and restore vision. When my son was diagnosed with KC in both eyes, the doc said he would need cornea transplants. After some of the newer treatments, his corneas have stabilized and he is seeing better. Please visit this site and do the research so you can help your mom. It’s not just for KC patients, it’s also for family members.
