12 Angry Men.
For my Intro. to Criminal Justice class, we were required to watch the 1957 classic 12 Angry Men by next week, I watched it last night and to my surprise I have to say it was a pretty decent movie. I’m not one for classic black and white films, they just don’t appeal to me and I wasn’t really looking forward to this one because what movie about 12 jurors, all of whom find the boy accused of murder guilty except one, that have to be convinced by the man who thinks the boy is innocent that he is not guilty is interesting?
I think what got me most about this movie was the fact that it made me realize that there are a lot of prejudice that go into deciding if someone’s faith, whether they face many years of jail time or the death penalty. One of the jurors said he was guilty for the simple fact that he was a Puerto Rican boy, the other said he was guilty because he hadn’t had a relationship with his own son for the past two years and thus thought all kids “these days” were worthless, his own personal upset from his relationship from his son gave him reason enough to say the boy accused of murder was guilty. I can only imagine how often this happens in real court and in real jury rooms and really it is sad to say that many people, as we see it through out the news sometimes, are convicted and thrown into jail for crimes they did not commit only to find out years later by miracle that they were innocent the whole time.
